”Over the next twenty minutes, both teams’ defenses stepped up to the challenge and maintained the score. Unioto’s Cameron Thompson — moving back to defense from the midfield to replace the injured Asher McBee — Ashton Sigler, Ricardo Arrendondo and Joe Lafreniere raised their game to combat the attack from Wood, Crawford and Danny Bentley.”

“It was a great game,” Cortez said. “[Zane Trace] did a really good job of being consistent up top and passing. They got in our midfield a little bit. But luckily, we have a guy in Cameron, who I consider to be the best defender in the state of Ohio. He gives us so much flexibility in the back and without him, it causes a lot of concern.

- Coach Fred Cortez

There were multiple times where Zane Trace (4-1) seemed to be working towards getting a great look at the goal. But in most of those instances, before the Pioneers could put a shot on frame, Cameron Thompson stepped in to put a halt to the scoring threat.

”Thompson’s role was simple. Don’t let anyone pass, and he excelled at every facet of his job as part of a defense that allowed 25 goals in 22 games, or 1.1 goals scored per night. Thompson’s play continued to elevate as Unioto went deep in the tournament. He earned himself a first-team SVC and first-team all-district nod.”

”The at times maligned outside backs of the Shermans, freshman Cameron Thompson and sophomore Ricardo Arrendondo, were fantastic throughout the match, controlling Blue Devil attacks the entire afternoon to limit their chances.”

Four names to know …

Defensively, you’re not going to find many better than Unioto’s Cameron Thompson. He’s a central reason why the Shermans have allowed just 19 goals all year long — a 0.90 goal per game average”

Everybody knows Lucas but for me, [defender] Cameron [Thompson] is right up there as an overall soccer player and as an athlete,” Cortez said. “He’s been helping coach multiple first-year varsity starters back there.

”Unioto’s Cameron Thompson spent all night taking on the challenge of defending D’Augustino, and despite the physical size difference, the junior defender understood his angles and used his veteran instincts to thwart any chance of a goal.

“He’s such a big, physical player, much bigger than me. So I knew that I just had to give him some space and cut in every time I saw my moment,” Thompson said. “We had other defenders marking him, but any chance that he got past them, I was ready to make a play.”
